On Nov. 10, 2012, the 8th annual Splash of Red Gala raised more than $330,000 to benefit vulnerable youth of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary (BGCC).
“We are incredibly thankful to all those who attended and supported the event to make it such a success. Splash of Red brings overall awareness to the work that Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary does to develop a strong continuum of services to help our vulnerable youth complete the journey of becoming self-sufficient adults,” says BGCC CEO Cheryl Doherty.
“The money raised at Splash supports the youth on their journey by providing basic human needs like food, shelter and guidance.”
The evening featured a spectacular dinner, a live and silent auction, WestJet vacation raffle, and dancing to the Dino Martinis. The Ballroom at The Glencoe Club was filled with Splash of Red Gala guests decked out in their best “splash of red” attire, which ranged from red socks and ties to more elaborate red jackets, shoes, boas and jewelry.
The highlight of the evening was a speech by Skylar, a former homeless youth. Skylar, 22, put the evening into perspective for the over 300 guests in attendance. Homeless at 13 years old, Skylar found shelter and support through BGCC’s Avenue 15 Homeless Youth Shelter and then the BGCC Infinity program which supports homeless youth, ages 16-24, to find permanent housing.
Now sober, drug-free, and with a place to call home, Skylar spoke about the difference that Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary made in his life.
Splash of Red, formerly Heroes and Legends, has been celebrated annually for the past 8 years raising over $1.5 million for vulnerable children and youth. This premier event is made possible by a very dedicated organizing committee including, Ruth Beddoe, Debbie Bonner, Murlyne Fong, Sandy Gibson, Claire Moroney, Sara Shaak, Barb Shaunessy and Maribeth Williams.
BGCC is honoured to be The Glencoe Club’s “charity of choice” for 2012. Their support continues to be pivotal in the ongoing success of Splash of Red.
