Aura Supportive Roommates and Host Home Providers 

The role of the Host Home is to provide an LGBTQ2S+ youth with a safe home where their identity is accepted and celebrated, and to create a space where youth feel as physically, emotionally and mentally safe as possible within their home. We encourage and support the modeling of supportive relationships, an accepting and flexible environment, and open communication in making decisions as a household. The Aura Host Homes program operates under the philosophies of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and stages of change.

There are two key ways to get involved with Aura:
  • As a supportive roommate in one of our peer homes 
  • As a ‘host home provider’, offering shared supportive accommodation in your own home

Become a Supportive Roommate

Aura is currently recruiting for supportive roommates to live in a centrally located home with three youth who are a part of the program, forming natural relationships and acting as a live-in support.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The supportive roommate is responsible for being a part of and helping shape a safe environment for three youth living in an Aura house. Further, the role is to assist the youth during their journey towards self sufficiency. The supportive roommate will be responsible for acting as a role model while living with the youth and supporting them in their daily living. Together with the Aura support worker, the supportive roommate will assist the youth in remaining safe and practicing their independent living skills. This position requires residing at the home. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Holding house meetings as needed
  • Attend meetings with Aura team as needed
  • Assisting youth with household chores
  • Connecting youth to agency supports in crisis situations 
  • Checking in with youth on a regular basis 
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Passion for supporting LGBTQ2S+ youth experiencing homelessness
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification is required before start date
  • Criminal check with vulnerable sector and Child Welfare Intervention Check
This is a contracted position with Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary. The position offers a room in the home, training, and ongoing support. The compensation for this position is that the successful candidate will not be required to pay rent or utilities. The anticipated start date is December 1st, however this is negotiable for the right candidate.

Become a Host Home Provider 

Aura is recruiting for ‘Host Home’ providers on an ongoing basis. The role of the Host Home is to provide an LGBTQ2S+ youth with a safe home where their identity is accepted and celebrated, and to create a space where youth feel as physically, emotionally and mentally safe as possible within their home. We encourage and support the modeling of supportive relationships, an accepting and flexible environment, and open communication in making decisions as a household.

We are looking for Host Home providers with:
  • Experience in and/or awareness of the LGBTQ2S+ community 
  • An extra room or suite in their home to host youth in a family-style home, supportive roommate, or shared accommodation situation 
  • Understanding of the impacts of homelessness and trauma on youth development 
  • Ability to commit for a minimum of one year 
We provide our Host Homes with:
  • Access to 24/7 emergency support, as well as day-to-day connection with program staff as needed
  • Compensation for room and board
  • Host Home Training
Requirements to become a Host Home provider include:
  • Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check 
  • First Aid/CPR 
  • Screening interview and home study/walk-through 
  • Completion of all required Host Home Training
